Clinical Externship
|
Following successful completion of the classroom portion of the program, students are placed in a clinical externship at a hospital, laboratory, or clinic. The purpose of the clinical externship is to allow students to be exposed to a real phlebotomy environment and clinical setting where you will utilize the skills learned in class. This is a vital part when applying for jobs. Prospective employers like to see that you are familiar with a phlebotomy work environment and have drawn blood on actual patients.
With Ohio School of Phlebotomy, we place you in a clinical setting and your placement is guaranteed. Assignment to a clinical externship is based on grades, final venipuncture performance, professionalism, attendence and the tuition balance paid in full. Externships are customized to fit the needs of the facility and student but all require full day time availability. Students may need to complete physical assessment, background testing and TB testing prior to patient contact depending on the specific requirements of each location.Generally students are placed within one week of completion of the course. If a student is unable to meet the schedule of the externship, a certificate cannot be given. The 40-hour clinical externship for the 6-week course is REQUIRED. |
| Certification |
Ohio School of Phlebotomy is an approved phlebotomy certificate program through the State of Ohio Board of Career Colleges and Schools. The state of Ohio does NOT require National Certification, although students taking the 6-week course will be given the option to sit for an accredited national examination through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT). This is optional and employment is not contingent upon successful completion; although it may make an individual more competitive in the job market. Some students with prior experience or education taking the 4-week course may qualify to sit for the NHA exam. Determination is made by NHA on a case-by-case basis.
